Snow Forecasting and Visitor Interaction Blog

NB:
I am reverting back to my main site for the usual winter cold outbreak updates etc, as this blog setup is a little hard to maintain and backup in html code. This site will remain here for now but will not be updated.

Feel free to post a comment or question at the bottom of this page.

Winter 2011 Comments:

We've had a mild run of weather in February up this way but don't let the warmer than average conditions worry you too much about winter prospects. April 2005 was very mild  and so were the other autumn months and indeed winter months in that year but we had two nice snowfalls:

The solar minimum occured in 2009, so we should start to experience the effects of that this winter. I say 'should' as there are other variables as well that might help or hinder the 2011 winter snowfalls. Its always a bit of a waiting and guessing game in our area.

At least the monthly, anomolous mslp is looking encouraging for a lead into autumn and winter. Its only one thing to keep an eye on but its particularly interesting to observe at present. This is the sort of chart below that we like to see, going into autumn. With low pressure averages for January well into negative anomolies, it does auger well for cold fronts pushing well north, eventually. Keep watching this link, as we need to see how it is in a month or two from now.
